Hello, dear readers!

Today time to submit you the test of the most demanded lenses Canon for full frame cameras.
One of lenses was sent me by the reader and the friend from far India, and I am grateful for participation of other lens to Roman who among other things told about the fascinating travel to Japan.
I also like to travel and it, probably, one of my biggest hobbies except the photo.

So here contestants:

Canon EF 24-70 I

Canon EF 24-70 I

Canon EF 24-70 II

Canon EF 24-70 II

Canon EF 24-70 I can be bought approximately for 700$ in a good condition. And a brand new Canon EF 24-70 II costs 1000$.

The question consists in, whether really the new version of a lens is so better than an old one?
At first we will test for “the long end”, i.e. for 70mm. The test was carried out on the Canon 5D mark II chamber with manual aiming on sharpness.
By the way, at Canon EF 24-70 II, which we bought together with Roman, the miss of an auto focus on the distant end is absolutely small, it could and be neglected.

From the interesting:
— At the “old” version of Canon 24-70 at increase in focal length moves, and at the new — moves forward that it is more logical.
— “Old” it is heavier than “new”. Both are felt a little plastic in comparison with old manual lenses.
— The zoom ring on new Canon EF 24-70 II goes very hardly. The focusing ring on it goes easily, but it is obviously not for manual focusing because of a low speed of a ring (sadly).
— The lens cover on the “new” version is made as at lenses Nikon and is removed from a lens less conveniently.

Focal length 70mm

Test distance 70*50=3.5m

41.3 lp/mm for Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and 56.7 lp/mm for Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM for the center of a shot.

F4
The situation on the first version of a lens was considerably improved, but all the same not to be compared by it to the new version.
It is “fuzzy”, blurring of borders.

Permission of lenses for the center of a shot:
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM: 46.4 lp/mm
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: 55.23 lp/mm

F5.6

F5.6

Left: Canon EF 24-70 I @f5.6, right: Canon EF 24-70 II @f5.6

On F5.6 diaphragm a difference is not considerable and with the naked eye in usual pictures it will be difficult to see it. But in the same time in test pictures it is easy to see it and therefore this difference as the picture is actual for those who is going to print the pictures in a big format.

Resolution of lenses for the center of a shot:
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM: 48.3 lp/mm
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: 52.85 lp/mm

F8

F8

Here, at last, we reached value of a diaphragm on which the difference is almost not noticeable. Actually I don’t doubt, as in this case Canon EF 24-70 mark II will win on resolution with a big separation, but to be fair there is a wish to note that you already so easily won’t find this difference. It is possible to consider that for F8 they are approximately equal for the ordinary user.

Resolution of lenses for the center of a shot:
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM: 46.59 lp/mm
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: 50.9 lp/mm

F11

F11

Left: Canon EF 24-70 I @f11, right: Canon EF 24-70 II @f11

On the full screen I see a small difference in resolution and the best contrast for the new version of a lens.

Focal length 50mm
Test distance 50*50=2.5m

There is a difference in lenses resolution on focal length 50mm, but not such considerable, as on 70mm.
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM: 42.1 lp/mm
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: 53.7 lp/mm

It is difficult to distinguish (Canon EF 24-70 ver.1 vs Canon EF 24-70 II) on focal 50mm by F4.
I.e. the difference still exists, but only for the detailed tests on the scale of 100%.
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM: 49.7 lp/mm
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: 56 lp/mm

On sharpness on a diaphragm of F5.6 and focal length 50mm Canon EF 24-70 USM ver.1 is almost identical to Canon EF of 24-70 II USM. Canon EF 24-70 USM ver.1 after all is a little worse as has residual HA on contrast edges.
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM: 54.12 lp/mm
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: 55.4 lp/mm

The difference on resolution between Canon EF 24-70 USM ver.1 and Canon EF of 24-70 II USM to F8 and 50mm focal length is by sight insignificant.
Measurements confirm it.
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM: 50.7 lp/mm
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM: 50.7 lp/mm
The difference on permission between Canon EF 24-70 USM ver.1 and Canon EF of 24-70 II USM to F11 and 50mm focal length is by sight insignificant.

Intermediate results
The lens Canon EF of 24-70 II USM on an open diaphragm 70mm is strongly ahead of the ancestor Canon EF 24-70 USM ver.1. There is a big difference in sharpness, and also has much less HA, even it isn’t enough! In this plan the new lens Canon EF of 24-70 II USM is similar to a qualitative fix lens. We will congratulate engineers of Canon for this successful development!
The Canon EF of 24-70 II USM on 50mm is also ahead of the ancestor Canon EF 24-70 USM ver.1 on resolution, but already to a lesser extent. To F5.6 diaphragm this difference almost completely disappears.
