The lens Mir-24H MC 35/2 is one of the best and available Soviet wide-angle lenses at the price.

Its weak place — a multienlightenment, as well as on all Soviet lenses. Because of it it is inclined to lose contrast at side and back light, to catch “hares”.
That is why it has so low price.
It perfectly fits on the Canon and Nikon cameras, it is focused without problems on infinity. And there are two options of this lens Mir-24M (on M42 carving) and Mir-24H (with Nikon F lens hood).
It is difficult to find a lens on M42. But there are a lot of Nikon. Optically they have to be identical as they have the same optical scheme. But they are made in a different way, Mir-24M is madein the Krasnogorsk mechanical plant, and Mir-24H is made in Arsenal plant.
I got on testing a 1988 lens. It is possible to consider that it is quite “fresh” among other Soviet lenses (the lens Mir-24 made from 1976 to 1999).
From the interesting It should be noted that lenses though have the identical optical scheme (according to those data that I found), but have different resolution.optical scheme

It is on M42 carving, very convenient for Canon owners as fits very densely, as native.
Resolution on TU (center/edge): 40/21 lines/mm

Where to take data on resolution still unclear. They are brought on: lens-club.ru, photohistory.ru, zenitcamera.com, ixbt.com.
Right there you can see other data, where the resolution is already 53/27 on an open diaphragm!!! (F2) with reference to a source of “Council of Federation No. 9 1986”. Mysterious letters of Council of Federation are deciphered as “The reference book of the photographer”.

What does it give to us?
1) We tested it on an open diaphragm for the magazine.
2) They didn’t write at what distance they were tested. perhaps autocollimator
3) The lens allegedly showed very much good results, and even on an open diaphragm! Doubtfully. Demands check.
I found the magazine with the name of the same name and there weren’t any data. How many sites copied this link to “The reference book of the photographer” which they even didn’t see.
Also some refer to D.S.Volosova data, our most famous optician. But in its book “Photographic Optics” there are no these data.
Soon you can see the library for all who will open supported the project with a lot of valuable books. There is a free access. It will be replenished with specially selected books on technology of shooting, the advanced processing methods in a photoshop and theoretical optics.

Some assume that Mir-24M gave 40/21 lp/mm, and Mir-24H gave 53/27 lp/mm.
Thus we come to that data are extremely contradictory and suspicious. We will test.
Considering that there are a very high resolution, I tried to squeeze out a maximum.
The transfer of dots per inch to lp/mm is a subject of separate article and now we won’t stop. We will consider that this resolution is no enough.

F2 diaphragm

Distance to a target: 0.61m

Why it is so? MDF is 0.3m, but at such distance there is nothing to shoot. It after all is not a macrolens. 0.6m seemed to me a smallest distance at which there is some sense to photograph. According to my assumptions, the resolution of a lens at such small distance has to be the greatest. I was right or wrong — the test will show. Norman Koren, the author of the test Imatest complex didn’t give the direct answer to me (though he gave references to the incomplete articles where he studies it), at what distance the resolution has to be the greatest. Also the author of QuickMTF didn’t give the direct answer also ( he explained nothing and I didn’t give any references).

As you can see, in the center of a shot at distance 0.61m we were granted the resolution only by 29 lp/mm. So the resolution can be slightly higher.
So there is the center/edge of a target for which we received these 29/8.55 lp/mm.

Slightly we will increase the distance to a target and we will look as it will affect on resolution of a lens.

As you can see, the initial assumption that “the closer — the better” didn’t come true. It appears at distance 0.92m the lens proves to be better.
Resolution center/edge: 39/20 lp/mm
Thus we reached data on resolution which are specified in the majority of sources (40/21 lp/mm).
It would be possible to consider that the lens is good and the test was successful, but we will try to test it at distance 50 x focal length of a lens which is recommended by Norman.

The maximum resolution in the center of a shot is 33.7 lp/mm
From edge I didn’t have test sites, but already at distance approximately 15mm from the center of a shot the resolution falls to about 15 lp/mm. On the edge it has to be even less.
I.e. the resolution is not so high. It means that we tested it at closer distance.
Preliminary conclusions: Resolution of a lens at a close distance corresponds to passport data and much less data specified in the notorious reference book. Not for nothing at me doubts arose. 50 lp/mm the then are very good indicator.

On the edge of a shot I had no test site, because the distance strongly differs from the previous distance, it is possible to assume that it is 20 lp/mm.

Mir-24Н 35/2 MS proved to be very well. Yes, it concedes to modern expensive zooms and to fixes, but it is quite sharp lens at low price.
It pleased with the indicators on resolution in the center of a shot, though it is fuzzy at the edges. The situation at edges gradually improves with cover of a diaphragm and on F11 diaphragm it becomes accepted. For landscape photographing where we can see a F11 working diaphragm, Mir-24H certainly is suitable.
It has low contrast and if for a portrait lens it is not bad in certain cases, for a landscape it is not good at all. BUT! It is worth to remember that many people will use this lens on cameras with a krop-factor where Mir-24Н 35/2 MS will just become a regular/portrait lens 50mm.
— we disproved the data that Mir-24H has resolution in the center of a shot more than 50 lines on 1mm.
— if to consider the brother of Mir-24H — Mir-24M, It should be noted that they have enough differences. But except notorious “the reference book of the photographer” nobody provides such high data on resolution of a lens. As (Mir-24М) in general it isn’t enough of them, I didn’t manage it to the test yet.
— an optimum distance for the lens Mir-24H from 1m and indefinitely. It is focused at the minimum distance 0.3m, but shows results much worse.

Enlightenment

Mir-24Н, as well as all other Soviet lenses with a multienlightenment, not really qualitative enlightenment. It is not recommend to use LensPen (unlike western) and in general it very unstable to scratches.
Try to dust a brush and to be limited to it. The enlightenment is unstable to many cleaning structures.

Features

The lens Mir-24H has a bayonet joint Nikon F and will please not only owners of the Canon, but it is even more Nikon owners.

Alternatives

At once I want to pay your attention to Carl Zeiss Distagon 35/2.8 with/. As we see, the illumination is a little less, but sharpness at the edges of a shot is much higher, as well as contrast. If the price (at the moment the good copy can be bought somewhere for 500usd) doesn’t frighten him, you can look at its option of transition with Mir-24H at a better lens.
